I’m using the explorer 6 provided with verizon/yahoo dsl. Just switched over from dialup and already my firewall log is loaded with hack attemps and all kinds of port scans.

Sounds to me like you Firewall is doing its job. You keep getting pinged because you computer is answering them. This way the hackers know your computer is legit and keep pinging trying to find an open port to infect through. Go into your firewall settings and activate the Stealth Mode. The Pings are not answered in Stealth and the hackers think the IP address in no longer valid and stop pinging your IP. As long as your computer is not on a local network, you should have no problem using the stealth mode.

I agree and it does sound like your firewall is doing its job and stealth mode should work. The only way I know to enable a proxy server is to either buy the proxy server software and install it or build another PC and obtain a copy of ISA server and use it for a proxy server. I don’t think there would be any problems with doing that. Just make sure if or when you do it you open up port 80 which is the port your computer uses to get out to the Internet.
