extreme popups, computer unuseable, how to fix?
so i’m fixing a computer for a friend of a friend… it’s a real mess… adware everywhere… enough programs loading on startup and enough popups sneaking through the popup blocker to practically freeze up the computer, and a hijacker that takes internet explorer to a shopping site every time i go to yahoo to download y! popup blocker…
so i figured let’s go unload all the adware/unused mem hogs i can in add/remove programs, hopefully to speed up the computer enough to download the y! toolbar b4 the hijacker hijacks me out of yahoo. i was doing really well, the computer was getting noticeably faster and more responsive… i still couldn’t quite get there, so i uninstalled the cheesy no-name popup blocker, i.e. “it’s not working anyway, let’s start with a clean slate”.
now i’m screwed… about 2 popups a second, way too fast to keep up with, and i can’t even get near yahoo.
how would you fix this? i’m thinking a flatten and reload is in order, any other ideas?
downloading anything on this computer is out of the question, in about 25 seconds there were literally 50+ popups on the screen.
i was also thinking about pulling the hard drive and daisy chaining it on my computer, running anti-virus and anti-spy… but what are the chances that a virus could get from that hard drive to my machine too fast for my CA anti-virus to catch it?
the computer in question has MacAfee loaded, but she let her subscription expire… but the popups hog so many resources nothing else can be done with the computer. haven’t tried it in safe mode, though, do adware popups still pop in safe mode?
